80072EE2 Severity: Medium Connection to update server interrupted
Classic Windows Update error that also appears in Teams when update attempts fail. DNS, firewall, or proxy are the main suspects.
Affected systems
Symptoms
- 80072EE2 on Teams launch or auto-update
- Same number visible in Windows Update
- Other Microsoft server connections fail
Possible causes
- Windows firewall blocks outbound traffic
- Proxy or VPN breaks the Microsoft endpoint
- DNS server cannot resolve teams.microsoft.com
- Antivirus with aggressive TLS inspection
Solutions
1.Test DNS and connectivity
-
Open PowerShell as admin.
-
Test DNS.
nslookup teams.microsoft.com -
Test reachability.
Test-NetConnection teams.microsoft.com -Port 443 -
If DNS fails: try a different DNS (1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8).
2.Allow Microsoft 365 endpoints
-
Microsoft lists all required endpoints: https://learn.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/enterprise/urls-and-ip-address-ranges
-
Ask IT to allowlist these in the firewall.
-
Especially *.microsoft.com, *.office.com, *.office365.com, *.skype.com.
3.Disable antivirus TLS inspection
-
In the antivirus, search for 'HTTPS scan', 'SSL inspection', or 'Web protection'.
-
Disable temporarily.
-
Restart Teams and retry update.
4.Test VPN or proxy
-
If VPN is on: disconnect briefly, check if Teams connects now.
-
If proxy: check Internet Options proxy settings, bypass *.microsoft.com if needed.
Background
80072EE2 is actually a Windows Update error meaning ‘connection timeout’. Teams uses the same Windows stack for update checks and so shares the code. If Windows Update is also affected, it hints that network diagnostics need to be broad.
