Where are my chats?
Suddenly many chats are gone from the list. Usually harmless: a filter is set. Here are all the places Teams can hide chats.
Affected systems
Quick fixes
- Check the filter in the chat list (top filter button)
- Toggle sort between 'Activity' and 'Created'
- Bring hidden chats back via search
First suspicion: filter
Above the chat list in Teams there is a filter button. If “Unread” or ”@-mentions” is active, you only see chats matching that. Everything else looks gone but is just filtered out.
Fix: click the filter button, “Reset filter” or “All”. All chats are back.
Second suspicion: hidden chats
Teams lets you hide chats individually (right-click a chat → “Hide”). Hidden chats disappear from the list but are not deleted.
Fix: use the search bar, search for the recipient. The chat appears - a new message or click brings it back.
Third suspicion: muted chats are collapsed
Muted chats appear lower or not at all in the activity view. They are not gone, just deprioritized.
Fix: change sorting in the chat list to “Activity” or “Date”, or find the chat via search.
Fourth suspicion: wrong tenant
If you had chats in another organization and you are currently in your home org: those chats are obviously invisible. This is Teams by design.
Fix: tenant switcher top right, change to the correct org. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds for chats to load.
Fifth suspicion: retention policy
Accounts with data retention can auto-delete very old messages or chats. Typical: 90 days, 1 year, or “after leaving the organization”.
Fix: you cannot fix this yourself. Ask IT to show the retention policy. For critical lost data, an eDiscovery admin can view backups.
Sixth suspicion: bug after update
Sometimes after a Teams update, chats temporarily disappear from the list while the sync database rebuilds. Be patient - usually they are back in 5-10 minutes.
Fix: cache reset can help but forces a fresh sync. Patience first, then cache:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
Seventh suspicion: web client shows different
The web client (https://teams.microsoft.com) sometimes shows different chats than the desktop client - e.g. because of a stale local cache. Cross-check is worth it.
