Custom backgrounds not loading in Teams
You uploaded a custom background but it does not appear in the picker. Asset cache, tenant policy, or file format are the suspects.

Quick fixes
- Check image format: JPG or PNG, at least 1920x1080
- Copy the image manually into the Uploads folder
- Tenant policy: are custom backgrounds allowed at all?
Image requirements
Microsoft accepts:
- Format: JPG, PNG, or BMP
- Minimum resolution 1280x720, ideally 1920x1080
- Max size: 50 MB
- Sensible: landscape 16:9 (otherwise the image stretches)
Manual upload
In Teams: background picker in a meeting → “Add new”. If that fails, the manual path:
Windows:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads
macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Backgrounds/Uploads
Drop the image there, restart Teams. Next meeting it appears in the picker.
Tenant policy
Some organizations block custom backgrounds for security or compliance reasons. Then only blur or Microsoft default backgrounds are available. Ask IT to check the meeting policy.
Hardware acceleration required
Background effects need a GPU. In Teams Settings → General → “Use hardware acceleration” enable. Very old CPUs without AVX2 do not support this.
Effects engine is newer
The new Teams client (2.x) integrates effects more reliably. If you still use classic, switch.
