Account not found

Microsoft Entra cannot find the specified account in the tenant. Typos, old email addresses, or an account in a different tenant are the common causes.

Symptoms

  • AADSTS50034 immediately after entering the email
  • Message 'We couldn't find an account with that username'
  • Other accounts work fine

Possible causes

  • Typo in the email address
  • Account was renamed or deleted
  • You enter a personal address but the system looks in the corporate tenant
  • Account only exists in another tenant of the organization

Solutions

1.Check the email address

  1. Rule out typos, especially in long addresses with hyphens.

  2. After a domain migration, verify whether you should use the old or new address.

2.Confirm with IT that the account is active

  1. If you are sure the address is correct, ask IT whether the account is active.

  2. Some tenants automatically deactivate accounts after long inactivity.

  3. During tenant migrations the account may have moved to a new tenant.

3.Personal vs work account

  1. If your personal address is also used for work, mix-ups happen.

  2. Open https://login.microsoftonline.com in a browser and observe which account picker appears.

AADSTS50034 is usually a typo or an account-confusion problem. A private browser window and clean email entry diagnoses it in a minute.
