GENERIC-STARTUP Severity: Medium We are sorry, we have run into an issue
Teams will not start and shows a generic error without a code. Here is how to find the real cause.
Affected systems
Symptoms
- Teams shows 'We are sorry, we have run into an issue'
- The app launches briefly and then closes
- No specific error code is visible
Possible causes
- Corrupt local cache
- Outdated Teams version
- Conflicting add-ins or third-party tools (antivirus, Snap Camera)
- Missing WebView2 component on Windows
- Corrupt Keychain on macOS
Solutions
1.Clear cache (classic and new client)
-
Quit Teams via Task Manager or Activity Monitor so no process remains.
-
Delete the classic cache.
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams -
Delete the new cache.
%localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams -
Restart Teams.
2.Update to the latest version
Windows
-
Open the Microsoft Store or Microsoft 365 app center.
-
Check for Teams updates and install them.
-
Reboot.
macOS
-
Open Microsoft AutoUpdate (Help → Check for Updates in any Office app).
-
Install updates for 'Microsoft Teams'.
-
Quit and relaunch Teams.
3.Install WebView2 runtime (Windows)
Windows
-
Download the runtime from Microsoft.
-
URL: https://developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-edge/webview2/
-
Install the Evergreen version with admin rights.
-
Reboot.
4.Collect logs and send to IT
-
If nothing else helps, collect the diagnostic logs.
-
Logs file.
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\logs.txt~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/logs.txt -
Send the file to IT - the real error code usually shows up there.
