Audio not working in Teams
Microphone muted, no speaker sound, or echo during meetings. Full diagnostic with OS-specific steps.
Affected systems
Quick fixes
- Pick the correct audio device in Teams settings
- Reconnect headset or pick it inside the meeting
- Check microphone permission in the OS
Microphone not detected
In Teams: profile picture top right, Settings, Devices. Confirm the correct microphone is selected. Teams sometimes picks the wrong default after an update.
Microphone permission in the OS
Windows
- Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone
- Enable “Let apps access your microphone”
- Enable Microsoft Teams in the list

macOS
- System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone
- Enable Microsoft Teams
- Quit Teams and relaunch - permissions are evaluated only on launch
Linux
On modern distros with PipeWire:
pavucontrolOpen, “Recording” tab, show Teams as a running source, pick the correct input.
On Wayland, ensure xdg-desktop-portal and pipewire-pulse are
installed.
iOS
- Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone
- Enable Microsoft Teams
Android
- Settings, Apps, Microsoft Teams, Permissions
- Allow Microphone
No sound from the speakers
Make sure the correct output device is active. A connected monitor with its own speakers can hijack playback.
Windows
Click the speaker icon in the taskbar, the arrow up for selection, pick the device.
macOS
Hold Option and click the speaker icon in the menu bar - you can pick input and output directly there.
Echo or feedback
Enable echo cancellation in Teams Settings, Devices. When possible use a headset rather than separate speakers and microphone.
