Guest access to foreign organization not working
You were invited as a guest to another organization but cannot access their Teams content. Multiple pitfalls possible.
Affected systems
Quick fixes
- Check the invite email in the correct inbox
- Open the invite link in a private browser window
- Switch to the foreign tenant in the Teams tenant picker
Step 1: accept the invite
A guest invite arrives by email with a link like
https://login.microsoftonline.com/...&id=.... You must click this link
once and follow the prompts. Only then is your account active in the
foreign tenant.
If you skip the link and look for the tenant in the Teams client, it will not be there.
Step 2: open with the right account
Microsoft sometimes catches the invite link with the wrong account. Tips:
- Right-click the link, open in a private browser window
- Actively pick the account named in the invite email
- Complete MFA
Step 3: switch tenant in Teams
Only after a successful acceptance does the foreign tenant appear in the tenant switcher (top right next to your profile picture). Click it, wait 30 seconds, then you see the foreign org’s teams and channels.
What guests do not see
Even with successful guest access there are limits:
- No access to the host’s OneDrive files
- Some apps in Teams are disabled for guests
- Calls and voicemail often do not work
- Search is limited
That is Microsoft’s default, not a bug. The guest tenant can loosen these restrictions, but many organizations keep them active by choice.
When the invite expired
Guest invites expire after 90 days of inactivity. In that case: request a fresh invite.
