Teams update stuck or stays on old version

Teams should auto-update but does not. Classic and new client are a problem on their own.

Quick fixes

  • Quit Teams and reopen - updates are checked on startup
  • Switch to the new Teams client (classic is end-of-life)
  • If stubborn: uninstall and reinstall

How auto-update works

Teams checks for updates on startup and installs them silently in the background. You see at most a banner “Teams was updated, restart to apply”.

If that does not happen, the update process is stuck.

Check for updates manually

In Teams top right click your profile → “Check for updates”. Teams actively pulls the latest version. If nothing happens or an error appears, continue to diagnostics.

Classic or new?

Microsoft has two Teams clients on the market:

  • Classic Teams - end-of-life since early 2024, no more active updates
  • New Teams (Teams 2.x) - current version

If you still use classic, “no update” is technically correct: there is nothing left. Fix: switch to the new client.

In Teams: profile, “Try the new Teams”. If the toggle is missing, IT must enable it tenant-wide.

Check the update source

Windows

The new Teams comes via the Microsoft Store. Verify Store works:

  1. Open Microsoft Store
  2. Library → Get updates
  3. “Microsoft Teams” should be updateable here

If Store hangs:

wsreset.exe

in Run dialog - resets the Store cache.

macOS

Updates come via Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). Open any Office app, Help → Check for Updates. MAU should launch and update all Microsoft apps including Teams.

If MAU hangs:

open "/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app"

directly.

When the update never comes

Last resort: uninstall and reinstall.

Windows

  1. Settings → Apps → Microsoft Teams → Uninstall
  2. Also uninstall “Microsoft Teams classic” if present
  3. Clear cache: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams and %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe
  4. Reinstall from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads

macOS

  1. Quit Teams
  2. Applications folder → Microsoft Teams to Trash
  3. Cache: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams and ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
  4. Reinstall from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads
